Beautiful smooth skin, strong locks of hair, curvaceous body, and a stunning smile. She’s no size 4, but Queen Latifah is more attractive then a lot of the “skinny” women I know. You see her in the Jenny Craig commercials touting, “I’m a size healthier!” I want to be a size healthier too, but is that a goal? Is that measurable? Can I say, “I’ll be a size healthier by September 10th 2008?” Well, yes and no. You can be “healthier” and set goals to get there. You just need to plan it out. You need to define what “healthier” means to you. You need to set measurable and realistic goals that will take you there. Take baby steps. Here are some ways to help you achieve your health goals:

- Exercise. Find a partner if you can. It’s always hard to come up with excuses to flake out on exercising if you have someone you need to answer to. Join a gym that has what you need or want. That was actually my motivator. I joined a no-frills gym. It just has the machines. No classes, no swimming pool, no sauna, no men trying to pick up on you and no women trying to intimidate you. In the past, one excuse I always found myself using for not going jogging is that I didn’t feel safe exercising outside early in the morning. Well, a crowded gym with loads of witnesses and muscular people ready to help a damsel in distress makes me feel safe. Set a goal to exercise at least 20 minutes every other day. Then keep increasing the time and/or the number of days. You’ll be noticing a difference in how you feel and how your clothes fit in no time.
- Eat healthy, natural foods. Natural foods will generally have more nutrients and fewer calories than packaged food. If you find yourself hungry mid morning, reach for a piece of fruit or a single serving of nuts. Pack your own lunch. You can control what you put into your food. Try and stick to the goal of 5 fruits and/or vegetables a day. Not only do they make you feel a little more full, but they are loaded with nutritional fiber. Again, you’ll be feeling better and more energetic when you eat right.
- Keep a food diary. If you find yourself wondering, “Why am I not losing weight? I don’t eat that much.” Well, you will see those little hidden calories here and there if you are diligent in writing down everything you eat that day. It seems difficult and tedious, but seeing how much I’ve already eaten in a day can sometimes make me more aware of my next meal. Set a goal of your daily caloric intake. (You can find caloric calculators online. It will tell you how many calories you can have a day to get to the size/weight you want based on your current age, weight, and activity level.)
- Lastly, don’t deprive yourself, but don’t over indulge. If you want to lose weight, your daily caloric intake should be less than calories spent. So set a certain amount of your daily calories aside for your “bonus” that day.
If you follow these steps, you’ll be a size healthier in no time.
